Iran opens $1bn extension of Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar

Developed with an investment of $1bn, this phase of Shahid Beheshti Port will offer a new transit route between India, Iran and Afghanistan.

The new extension has also increased the port’s current capacity from 2.5 million tonnes to 8.5 million tonnes.

It will further help Iran in promoting tranship and transit of goods in addition to creating new jobs.

Iran President Dr Hassan Rouhani said: “This port has a special position and situation, which can shorten the North-South Corridor and connect it to the ocean.

“Neighbouring countries east of Iran, like Afghanistan and our northern neighbours in Central Asia are linked to southern Iran and the open waters and the ocean through this corridor.

“This matters politically to us and will develop our relations with eastern and northern countries, and even Europe in the future.

“In designing this port, five piers will be put into operation and more than 200ha of new land will generate employment for the people of this province and also bring Iran closer to other countries.”

In order to build the newly opened extension, 15 million cubic metres of dredging was carried out.

Furthermore, 1,650 of wavelength breakers and pond measuring a depth of 16m² and 1.5m² were developed.

100,000t ships are currently capable of mooring at phase 1 of Shahid Beheshti Port and it can help in importing and exporting basic and general goods in and out of the port in future.
