Indian airport installs CAT III-B landing system

CAT III-B ILS lets aircraft land with Runway Visual Range (RVR) of up to 50m with a decision height of 15m.

NSCBI airport director Atul Dixit said: “Kolkata has operationalised CAT III-B landing system on runway 01R.

“The facility also includes visual guidance through taxiway centreline lights up to aircraft parking stands from 4 January.”

The airport is located in Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.

Both sides of the runway 19L-01R can handle low visibility operations with the implementation of the ILS.

NSCBI has become the fifth airport to have been equipped with CAT III-B ILS. The system is also used in Amritsar, Jaipur, Lucknow and New Delhi.

Flights operating at the airport have been disrupted due to fog during December and January every year.
