Smiths Detection wins supply contract at Düsseldorf Airport

The contract includes installation of 14 advanced HI-SCAN 10080 XCT scanners. It was awarded by the Procurement Office of the German Ministry of Interior.

Along with the supply contract, Smiths Detection has also signed an eight-year associated service agreement.

The baggage scanning systems can be further upgraded in the future to detect new explosive threats.

Smiths Detection EMEA vice-president Tony Tielen said: “European airports are currently very focused on upgrading to ECAC Standard 3 approved EDS to meet the new regulations.

“This does, of course, require a financial investment which must be clearly weighed against any operational benefits. Airports are keen to have the assurance that future security requirements and passenger growth will be accommodated by the new technology.”

Equipped with high-resolution X-ray technology, computed tomography (CT) and advanced detection algorithms, the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT scanners can process up to 1,800 bags per hour. They will increase both security and operational efficiency at the airport.

Smiths Detection said that the new equipment will be installed to upgrade the baggage screening facilities in both terminals. The screening systems will be operated by the German Federal Police.

Installation of systems is expected to commence this year and will be launched over the next four years.

Düsseldorf Airport serves more than 23 million passengers each year.
